As soon as you know you are definitely going to be moving you can start the ball rolling with a few first steps. If moving abroad you will need to sort out any passports, permits and relevant documentation as soon as is feasible also check if your destination has any restrictions on items you are taking. If taking pets quarantine will have to be applied for up to 6 months beforehand. You also need to decide whether or not you are taking your car.
First Things First – Sorting & Clearing Out
Have a good clear out including the attic cellar or garage and prioritize items you wish to take with you and make a list. This will help to decide what size removal vehicle you will need. You can hire a skip if there are a lot of unwanted items, donate to a charity shop, do a car boot sale or visit the local recycling facility. Arrange to have large or bulky unwanted articles picked up, most local councils provide some sort of service for this.
If you are renting your property, check your lease to find out how much notice you need to give to your landlord and in what form. Repair or replace anything that has been broken, damaged or lost and try to leave everything as you found it. Think about which date you would like to redirect your mail from. Check if you will need to apply for a parking permit for the removal van.
Three Weeks and Counting – Lists Galore
Put on your thinking cap and make a list of people, organisations etc you will need to inform about your change of address and the date you are moving.
These should include:-
|
|
Get together items you will need when moving such as boxes, parcel tape, sheets or towels, newspapers, carrier bags. These will prove very useful when packing up your belongings and to help protect them from any damage. Remember to decrease your freezer and cupboard food.
One Week to go - Separate Valuables
Dismantle and store anything you can ready to be moved and try to arrange for young children or pets to stay with relatives friends to save them becoming stressed during the move. Buy any local currency or travellers cheques where applicable. Separate valuables or important documents to be taken in your personal bags. Sort out any last minute laundry that needs doing and collect anything from the dry cleaners.
Up to Three Days Before the Move – Finish Off Packing
Make sure there will be space for your removal truck. Clean out the fridge, freezer and oven even if you aren't taking them with you. Make sure you have any tools you may need handy such as a hammer or screwdriver. Finish off all packing and clearly mark boxes with what they contain and which room they are destined for. Remove the curtains or fixtures, if taking a washing machine ensure it is disconnected and that the transit brackets are fitted to secure the drum. Relax for the evening and get an early night.
Moving Day has Arrived – Collect Removal Vehicle
If you are hiring a self drive removal van or truck you will need to collect it then arrange with your helpers how it is to be loaded. Older children may like to be in charge of packing their own box. Last items such as bathroom essentials and bedding can be packed before a last check of every room including garage.
These procedures when followed can contribute towards a smooth and pleasurable move. Allied Self Drive can supply vans, trucks and lorries for all your relocation needs and are happy to advise on any aspect of your move home or abroad.
