Diesel Exhaust Fluid in SCR Systems
EPA Diesel Emission Standards were set in 2010 in an effort to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides [NOx] emitted by diesel engines. NOx pollution is produced particularly by heavy duty vehicles and many engine manufacturers opted for SCR to address the problem.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid is stored in a tank onboard the vehicle and a small amount is injected into the exhaust upstream of the catalyst at a low dose rate of 3-5% of the diesel consumption volume. The fluid vaporizes and forms ammonia [ NH3] which in turn joins with the catalyst and converts the NOx into nitrogen [N2] and water [H20].
The exact quantity released is controlled and adjusted electronically specific to each engine size, temperature and speed. Due to the limited amount injected space is not unduly taken up within the vehicle.
